Candles

This is an of candles that I bought to film filler shots. I especially bought these colours because they complement our colour scheme and each colour represents different things within the music video.

These are images of me playing around with different shapes and patterns that may look good as a filler shot. I especially like the love heart shape because our music video is about displaying a womens' sexuality.

Logo's

1. Olympic rings

I personally like this logo because it has 5 different colours that stand out on a white background. However, i think that a different colour could be used instead of the black such as purple because black makes the logo look dull.

2. Starbucks

I'm not very fond of the Starbucks logo because I think the green that is used is dark. However, it looks very effective on the white background because it stands out.

3. Unknown

I really like this logo because it has very vibrant colours that stand out that is appealing to the eye. Also the shape of the logo is very effective.

4. Batman

I like the black Batman symbol on the yellow background because it allows the symbol to stand out. However, the yellow and black reminds me of a Bee. This could represent how the character is in his action role.

5 & 6. Nick and Superman

I personally like the shapes of these signs because they are unique. Also the colours of these signs are very effective because they stand out to the audience.

7. I personally think that this logo is effective because it has vibrant colours that appeal to the eye.The colours of the font of the logo makes people around the world familiar with this logo.

8,10 & 11 - I am not very fond of the reds in these logos' because they are dull and boring in my opinion. I personally think that if the logos' had a vibrant red it would appeal more to me.

9. Nike

The Nike sign is very dull personally. I would prefer if the sign was multi- coloured to make the sign more prominent.

Disco Beauty Fever Make up tutorial Analysis.

In this video it shows me step by step how to apply the classic Disco fever make up. In this particular video it focuses on the eyes. The eyes are enhanced by both bright and dark colours in order to draw attention to the eyes. The dark colour (black) which is used on the eye lids and eyelashes highlight the colour of the person's eyes. The bright colour (baby blue) which is in contrast to black also helps to point out the emphasis of the eyes, because the colours complement each other. I personally like the contrast in the colours because it is effective in drawing attention to the eyes. However, in my music video I would use a more warm and vibrant colour orange, and complement the colour with black. I think these colours would work well together because they are at either end of the colour spectrum. This will help to highlight the eyes of both of the characters.

In this tutorial it focuses on a more natural look. By applying low level of foundation and blusher, this is to prevent the beauty of the persons face being reconstructed by the make up. Blusher is added to stress the check bones of the person. As cheek bones in the 70's were seen as sexy. In my music video I will use this idea because it is effective. I am trying to stay as close as possible to the 70's feel in the make up department to pinpoint the era and make it clear to the audience the era we have targeted.

For the lips the artist has used a simple colour to prevent dramatising the look. I would personally add a more vibrant colour to the lips as this is an feature that has been decided by a questionnaire filled out by our target audience to stress, in the music video. The vibrant colour would help to emphasise this feature by calling attention to the lips.

Inspirations - Gone Girl

In this post I am going to discuss how "Gone Girl" trailer has inspired me and what I can take from this film and use in my own media project. I am going to separate my inspirations into sub headings such as Mise en scene, Editing, Sound and camera angles.

Editing

This trailer uses a mixture of cuts and fades in order to transition from scene to scene in order for the viewer to grasp the concept of the film. This is to prevent giving away too much of what is occurring in the film. However, revealing enough so it sparks an interest to the viewers.

Camera angles, lighting and mise en scene

Gone Girl trailer uses different camera angles and lighting in order to portray the movies storyline.

An establishing shot is used in order to set the scene for the movie in order for the viewer to see the type of environment that the characters are familiar with. This is for the viewer to start making opinions about what may occur next in the movie. This establishing shot conveys to the audience that the characters are upper class due to their surroundings. The main characters have a lake outside of their house this feature is associated with wealth and can represent calm and tranquillity.  Natural sunset lighting is used to make the shot look as natural as possible. The orange/ red and colours in the sky could symbolise anger, rage and calm. This could be a representation of the quotation "the calm before the storm."

An extreme close up is shown of the main character (Amy) writing an entry in what appears to be a diary. This shot is shown by key lighting focusing on the page and the main characters hand. This scene emphasises to the reader that Amy is very sentimental due to her recording events that have occurred throughout her life.

An wide shot is used in the trailer which shows people gathering in a park holding candles. The only lighting that is used in this scene is coming from the candles that are being held by the characters. This conveys to the audience that maybe someone has died or is missing and the people in the park holding candles are paying respect to that individual.

I personally like the extreme close up of the diary because it is a simple shot but it is done very effectively and it emphasises the story line other than two characters talking about how they feel.
I also like the use of the candles because it makes the scene appear to be more realistic.

Health & Safety

These are some of the rules that we need to follow to ensure that no cast members were hurt during the process of filming:

  • Make sure that the tripod was set up safely and correctly to prevent it falling and hurting members of the cast. Also reporting damaged equipment to teachers if the equipment is broken as soon as possible.
  • Place the memory cards carefully into the camera and look after them.
  • Always making making sure the battery is fully charged and check the power remaining throughout filming so we are not surprised by the camera running out of charge.
  • Ensure the camera is securely attached to the tripod and ensure the camera is left in the bag when not filming.

Research - Music video Disjuncture

Disjuncture - This is when there is little connection between the lyric and the video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.

Research - Music video Amplification

Amplification - Occurs when the videos introduce a new meaning that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.

Research - Music video Illustration

Illustration - This is when the music video complements the lyrics so a story is told.

Research - Skills Audit

I have recently reviewed the research I conducted for my music video which i looked at new techniques that can be used in order to entice the viewer such as jump cuts and different types of transitions. In comparison to AS I find A2 more challenging because we had a specific task whereas, A2 we had a more freedom of choice. The research process for A2 is longer and harder due to it being more intense due to more theory's that are linked to music videos. Technical elements such as Final cut pro are going to be vital for going forth with A2 due to being able to expand on my knowledge with the different applications. My experience from last year will help me with editing and filming due to being able to film quicker and edit my music video quicker than AS. However, A2 is more complex than A2; But I'm positive that all these different elements and ways of filming will definitely work in my favour this year.

Possible Fonts

1, 5 & 7.

These fonts communicator is that they all are bold. By the fonts being bold it stands out that draw attention to the reader. I would personally like to use a bold font in either by Magazine advert or Digipak. The bold lettering also creates tension and builds suspiciousion based on why the fonts look as they do and what correlation does it have to the rest of the Digipak or Magazine advert. I would consider using aspects of these fonts in my Magazine advert.

2 & 3.

These two fonts are very similar because they both have the same type of font. Personally I don't like this font because i think that it is to plain for a magazine advert or Digipak. I personally won't be considering these fonts for my Magazine advert or Digipak.

4.

Font 4 is very swirly and could be difficult to read for some of my audience. This could impact my magazine advert and Digipak negatively because it may result in people not wanting to purchase my album or magazine. On the other hand it may lead to people who didn't know about my work becoming more aware due to them liking how my Digipak and Magazine advert is set up. I wouldn't consider using this font in my Digipak or magazine advert.

6. This font really interests me because it looks very disorientated. The reason why I think this font looks disorientated is because the letters are different shapes and sizes. I really like this font and would consider using it in my Digipak.

Brief analysis of student music videos

There are aspects of this music video that I found very interesting, and would like incorporate and add a twist to make it complement the theme of my video. These aspects include the editing technique of changing the background colour to complement the shot theme. I would use this idea in my music video by changing the background colour to mainly red which can represent love, lust or anger. This would be used to convey to the viewer the character's current emotion at that specific time. The reason why i would do this is to emphasise the characters emotions because the audience may not be able to see this by the characters body language.

Another aspect that I liked is that the storyline of this video was fairly easy to follow. Whereas, the original music video the story line is very confusing which makes the original an abstract and performative video; and this version a narrative and performative music video. My music video is going to be a mixture of a performative because we plan to lip sing to the camera, and a narrative because we intend on having a specific storyline that the viewers are able to follow without any hassle or confusion.

On the other hand, there are some aspects to this music video that i don't like. One of these aspects are I think that this video can be very repetitive in various areas. The repetition makes it predictable for the viewer and may not entice them to continue watching the music video. I personally wouldn't use repetition is my music video because i feel that it isn't being creative and it will create a sense of boredom for the viewer.

I also think that more characters could have been used in the music video because it became very predictable after a 1 and a half into watching the music video.

Another aspect of this video that i didn't like was the time length of the video. The video was over 5 minutes long. I personally think that the video would've been more effective for the audience if they condensed their footage and added more effects such as on beat editing. In my music video I am going to make sure that my footage exceed 3 minutes and use most of my time editing to make ensure that my video is effective.

Research - Vernallis' theory

Carol Vernallis is a famous theorist which is based on music editing. She discovered that there is a lot more edits that occur in music videos than films. Vernalis theory is based on 4 key concepts such as:
  • Narrative
  • Editing
  • Camera movement and Framing
  • Diegesis
These are the 5 common elements that she found within music videos:
  • The camera pans with the video.
  • Jump cuts occur often.
  • Base track repetition to give structure.
  • To make a video more interesting the continuity rule is broken.
  • Transitions are used to gain the audience attention.

Treatment - Hot stuff

The audience will be presented with an image of coco and truffle together in disco clothing. Shortly after the names "Coco and Truffle" will enter across the screen. This will allow the audience to know the main characters of the music video. After there will be a blackout then a cut to transition into the new scene. A orange will appear on the record player and the record player will change from black to orange then from orange to black. The orange will spin and play the interlude of the sound which the viewer will be able to hear non- diegetic sound. This will be on the screen for about 15 seconds.

After a cut will occur and truffle who is my character will be sitting down on a sofa dressed in a red basketball jersey, short and black socks. She will have on no make- up and her hair will be down with tight curls a wide shot will be used in order to see the width of the living room. There will be back lighting coming from the television and a key light emphasising Truffle's facial expressions. She will begin to sing the first verse of the song.

Sittin' here eatin' my heart out waitin'
Waitin' for some lover to call.
Dialed about a thousand numbers lately.
Almost rang the phone off the wall.

Whilst lip syncing to the song Truffle will be eating very viciously and pausing to keep on checking her phone for her lover to call her. The red basketball jersey is a reflection of how the character is feeling at that specific moment which is anger and rage. There will then be a cut in order to introduce the next scene to the audience.

Shortly after the cut has occurred there will be several extreme close ups of various different female body parts such as legs, hips and face because they are known for men to be attracted to them. There will be on beat editing throughout the chorus and there will be several extreme close ups of both coco and truffles faces whilst we lip sync to the track. Then a dissolve will appear and both of the characters will be dancing by an orange background to the chorus.A blackout then a cut will transition the audience into the next scene.

Lookin' for some hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
I want some hot stuff baby this evenin'
Gotta have some hot stuff
Gotta have some love tonight
I need hot stuff
I want some hot stuff
I need some hot stuff

This is Coco's  scene she will be lip syncing to the audience expressing how she feels about not being on her own whilst dressed in a black lace dress. She will be situated on a balcony, it will be a pitched black night but we will have key lighting focusing on Coco to make her the focal point of the scene. There will be a variety of extreme close ups and mid shots to express the way that Coco feels.

Lookin' for a lover who needs another
Don't want another night on my own
Wanna share my love with a warm blooded lover
Wanna bring a wild man back home

This scene will have both Truffle and Coco together dancing with back up dancers who are both males and females. This is to appeal to both genders. We will use a variety of shots including wide shots and high angle shots when Coco and Truffle are dancing with back up dancers. Also key lighting will be used to highlight the dancers. There will also be on beat editing to complement the songs beat. Both Truffle and Coco will be wearing eccentric clothing such as right disco pants and a brightly coloured top to match with the love and lust theme of the music video. The dancers will also be dressed brightly coloured clothing and funky shoes to firstly, emphasise the genre of music and secondly, the era of the music.

Gotta have some hot love baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
I want some hot stuff baby this evenin'
Gotta have some lovin'
Gotta have love tonight
I need hot stuff
Hot love
Lookin' for hot love

During the musical interlude the viewers will continue to see the dancers and high angle shots of Truffle and Coco.

[Instrumental Interlude]

For the final chorus there will be Coco and Truffle in the scenery of a party/ rave lip syncing and enjoying the male attention. There will be extreme close ups of both male and female body parts that are found to be attractive. There will also be high angle shots to emphasise the scenery. In this shot I will use background lighting  All the actors will be wearing funky and eccentric clothing to match with the theme of the music.

How's about some hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
Lookin' for my hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight, yeah-yeah
I want some hot stuff this evenin'
I want some hot stuff baby tonight

Conventions of RnB Music.

There are common aspects of RnB music videos here are some of the conventions:
  • Slow paced cuts
  • Not many special effects
  • Dark locations
  • Commonly black and white, sepia and soften natural light
  • Flashy Cars and Jewellery
  • Nudity ( to a certain extent)
  • Extenuates body parts such as lips, bottoms. breast and bellies
I am going to try and include some of these aspects in my music video in order to meet some of the conventions.
